  1. Mold Pre – heating
    • In plastic moulding, the half – white halogen IR infrared heat lamp is used to pre – heat the mould. The infrared heat can penetrate the mould material, warming it up to the desired temperature. For example, in injection moulding of plastics, a pre – heated mould helps in better flow of the molten plastic. The heat reduces the viscosity of the plastic, allowing it to fill the mould cavity more evenly and completely. This is crucial for producing high – quality plastic parts with accurate shapes and dimensions.
    • The infrared heat lamp can heat the mould to a specific temperature range, usually between 80 – 120°C (depending on the type of plastic), much faster than traditional heating methods. This is because infrared radiation directly transfers heat to the object without having to heat the surrounding air first.
  2. Post – Molding Heat Treatment
    • After the plastic part is moulded, the heat lamp can be used for post – molding heat treatment. Some plastics may experience internal stresses during the moulding process. By applying infrared heat from the lamp, these internal stresses can be relieved. This is similar to an annealing process in metallurgy.
    • For example, in thermosetting plastics, post – molding heat treatment can improve the mechanical properties of the part such as its strength and toughness. The heat treatment helps in the cross – linking of polymer chains, which further stabilizes the structure of the plastic part.
  3. Drying and Surface Treatment
    • The heat lamp can also be used to dry the mould surface. If there is any moisture on the mould, it can affect the quality of the moulded plastic part. The infrared heat quickly evaporates the moisture, ensuring a dry and clean mould surface.
    • In addition, for some plastic parts that require a certain surface finish, such as a glossy or matte finish, the heat lamp can assist in the surface treatment process. By carefully controlling the temperature and exposure time to the infrared heat, the surface of the plastic can be modified to achieve the desired aesthetic and functional properties.
